Overview

California has authorized commercial driverless service from operators including Waymo and others. When these vehicles are involved in collisions, claims may run against the fleet operator, the vehicle manufacturer, software providers, and — in some pilots — a remote safety operator.

Sensor and perception logs — LIDAR, radar, and camera data, plus the system’s perception-and-prediction outputs at the moment of impact.
Software version — the specific build operating at the time of the collision.
DMV reporting — operators must report collisions to the California DMV; reports become part of the public record.
Manufacturer-vs-operator allocation — design defect, sensor failure, and operator policy each implicate different defendants.
Federal preemption — NHTSA standards may limit some design-defect theories.
